Phil was one of four finalists from twenty two countries.--“The other finalists all seemed to be involved in multi-million dollar organisations.--They couldn’t believe that the award would go to a small-town plumber from New Zealand, and neither could I,” said Phil.
The trophy, a gold clock placed within a solid piece of carved crystal, was presented to Phil by Sir Patrick Mayhew, Secretary of State for Northern Ireland.

Something I’ll never forget
As many readers will know, Phil has revived his ailing plumbing business, W H Shannon Ltd, and the Jim Hunter prize is awarded to the person who is judged to have shown great character and determination in refusing to be beaten.
“When my winning of the award was announced it was a feeling that I cannot describe, but more than anything I felt so humble, to win against some of these people was in some ways unfair.--Walking through that ballroom up to receive my award is something I shall never forget,” Phil said.
Phil was put through a number of informal and formal interviews with the judges before reaching the World Final, and scooping the Management Excellence Award.--He says he much appreciates the assistance given by David Lawson of Cause & Effect, Auckland, who are Worldcom partners, and he thanks British Airways and Air New Zealand for their support.
Following the intense media coverage on Phil’s win, he and his wife Julie were able to enjoy a holiday in the British Isles.
The Society of Master Plumbers and Gasfitters salutes Phil Routhan in this wonderful achievement.--It just goes to show what a New Zealand Master Plumber can do!
