Young Executive of the Year regional finalists

1995
NZIM MANAGEMENT MAGAZINE

Encouraging New Zealand’s brightest and best young executives is critical to the country’s future. So in 1994 Management magazine and the New Zealand Institute of Management established the NZIM Management magazine Young Executive of the Year Award.

The first two years of the Award have been outstandingly successful.--The 1995 Young Executive of the Year, Phil Routhan of Hokitika, was flown to Belfast to take part in the WORLDCOM World young Business Achiever Award.

The Young Executive of the Year Award was established to identify and acknowledge the achievements of our most enterprising and successful young executives.--They are important role models for our society.--This was publicly recognised by Prime Minister Jim Bolger when he officiated at the inaugural Young Executive of the Year Charity Luncheon in 1994.

This year three regional finals in July covering northern, central and southern sections of the country will identify finalists for the national award.--This will be presented at a charity luncheon in Wellington in August.

Russell Stanners

Telecommunications and Media Industry Manager, IBM New Zealand, Auckland.--Aged 33.--Northern regional finalist.

“Stanners pushed IBM to a leadership position in the industry through building its relationship with Telecom and offering advanced solutions that were not available in New Zealand at the time”

1994 Judges Comments

Once again the judges were impressed by the wide-ranging achievements of all nominees for the Young Executive of the Year Award.--“By the age of 35, and often when they were much young, these nominees had accomplished real success in their chosen careers,” they said.--One of the strongest attributes which shone through was the ability to innovate and put together new systems.--That achieved, they then showed the leadership skills necessary to pull in their teams behind them.--In many cases these young executives were leading teams of more mature people and doing it with style and equanimity.--All showed the ability to develop a vision.--That done, they then displayed the ability to focus on that vision – still maintaining the elasticity of thinking which enabled them to adapt the vision to suit changing circumstances.

“On a personal level, all contestants carried their work attributes, leadership and talents to their outside lives.--Despite the fact that they were all putting in longs hours at work, they found time to achieve the balance between home and leisure activities that results in well-rounded personalities.”

The Award

The winner of the Young Executive of the Year Award received a handsome trophy of granite and gold-plated bronze.

Last year’s winner represented New Zealand at the WORLDCOME World Young Business Achiever Award in Belfast.

The 1996 finalist will be flown to a major city in Europe or Asia for the next WORLDCOM World final.
